The paint industry uses a wide variety of chemicals, including:

Volatile organic solvents

These include aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, and ketones, and make up more than 30% of paint ingredients. The most commonly used aromatic hydrocarbons solvents are benzene, toluene, mixed xylenes, ethylbenzene (BTEX), and high flash aromatic napthas.

Other chemicals

These include acetic acid, which is used as a pH regulator and in the production of certain resins, polyurethane, methyl methacrylate, acrylic resins, drying oils, pigments, thinners, and film-forming materials.
